A local cab company owner has proposed a new solution to improve public transportation in Greater Napanee.
Ron Yeomans, owner of Napanee Cab, presented a plan to town council this week aimed at helping low-income residents and seniors get around town more easily.
Yeomans said the end of Deseronto Transit and the Senior Outreach Services bus has left many people without reliable transportation. His plan would offer subsidized cab rides to people who need help getting to the grocery store, doctor’s office, or social events.
Under the proposal, a typical $12 cab fare would be reduced to just $5. The town and community partners would cover $6, and Napanee Cab would pay $1. Yeomans also suggested a $300 transportation grant that 100 people could apply for during the first trial year.
To support rural areas, he recommended a shuttle service two days a week. Local groups like the Lion’s Club and Rotary Club have already pledged $5,000 each to the idea.
Council has asked town staff to bring back a full report to explore transit options for the 2026 budget and to see how this plan could fit into future services.
